Jeannette Rankin became the first woman elected to Congress. Kevin S. Giles explores her life and times in his biography, “One Woman Against War: The Jeannette Rankin Story.”

This powerful biography by Kevin S. Giles explores the life and times of Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to the US Congress. As a lonely dissenter she committed to following the dictates of her conscience, regardless of political consequences. Daughter of Montana pioneers. Guardian of democracy. Crusader for human rights and decency. Rankin first became a social worker, then a suffragist, and finally a lifelong pacifist. History remembers her as the only American to cast votes against US involvement in two world wars. In private life, Rankin often revealed her loneliness as crusaders do. She was fearful Americans would misunderstand her intentions and forget her accomplishments. One Woman Against War: The Jeannette Rankin Story, is the new and expanded edition of the author’s original Rankin biography, Flight of the Dove: The Story of Jeannette Rankin.

¶ “Kevin Giles’ new biography of Jeannette Rankin is the most comprehensive of all biographies written about her. Giles’ research is astonishing, his journalist’s style keeps the fascinating, heartbreaking and inspiring story moving at the pace of a work of great fiction.” Jeanmarie (Simpson) Bishop, writer and actor

    • Hi Charlie. It’s not a photo but a painting by artist Sharon Sprung of New York. It was completed in 2005, I believe, and hangs in the U.S. House of Representatives. Thanks for commenting.
